Emigration to Norway: Entry and work
Entry is unimpeded for EU- citizens with a valid passport. A residence permit is necessary after 3 month in the country. You can request this permit at the central Norwegian foreigners registration office(“Utlendingsdirektoratet”) of the Norwegian police. There you will have to verify your liquidity( work or means of subsistence) with the following documents:
- valid passport
- employment contract
- passport photo
The significance of your residence permit depends on the validity of your employment contract.
We strongly suggest to register before your removal to Norway to receive a so called “Födselnummer”. Most bureaucratic matters (e.g. entry and starting an account) depend on this number.
As a citizen of an EU-country you will not need a permit to work in Norway. Students do not face any restrictions either. The time span to find a job after emigration is 6 month. Please inspect whether your qualifications are acknowledged in Norway.
Customs/duties in Norway: What to regard when moving to Norway
When moving from Germany to Norway, you will have to consider the following regarding customs regulations: Norway is not part of the European Union. Imports from EU- countries will be handled like out of EU- imports. Norway has strict regulations for forex, food, homewares, pets, tobacco and alcohol. The following goods may not be imported without special authorization of the Norwegian custom:
- Drugs, medication and poison (except small amounts of medication for personal use)
- alcohol with over 60 %
- weapons and ammunition
- fireworks
- potatoes
- mammals, birds and exotic animals
- plants or part of plants
In case you want to import your car during the removal you will have to pay an import fee. Please note that cars not registered in Norway have a restricted concession. We would gladly take care of registration of the electronic export declaration and filling out of all custom documents for you.
